About
Jen Bush / Writer/Stylist/ Mom
Jen Bush started her career as a stylist working with a focus on music and fashion. After tiring of dragging garment bags around town in stilettos for years, she made the transition to the magazine world as a style editor for Violet Magazine. It was at Violet, where her mentor, Keki Mingus pushed her to start writing and a new passion was found. After attending a series of writing classes and workshops at UCLA, she started writing monthly for 944 Magazine. Focusing on personal essay pieces on everything from dating to dieting, with an added emphasis on fashion, beauty , celebrities and tastemakers. In 2010 she married and decided to put her career on hold to become a mother.
Rivers (the name was inspired by the lead singer of Weezer, a former client) was born in the summer of 2011, but things didn’t go as planned and the marriage ended quickly after. With a host of new topics to tackle and Rivers getting ready to start pre-school in the fall, she is back on the horse and back to writing again. Jen lives in the Pacific Palisades and is working on her first novel entitled, I Love you a Little. She is also documenting her heartfelt and sometimes humiliating journey to find love again with her blog, Dating with Diapers.

Things Mommies Do
December Story
The Mom Bomb

Over the past few months, I’ve been really putting myself out there in the dating world. Now that my son is over three years old and in pre-school, I am not exhausted for the first time since I can remember.

I am feeling like my old self, baby weight is gone, there is still some collateral damage to the body, but we can work with it now in clothing at least, hiding the lumps and bumps from the untrained eye. I am pretty much ...
over my divorce and life is new and fresh again. I am finally content and happy but I am needing a boy toy at least. I’m not even shooting for love of my life status, just a consistent Friday night date would be enough. So, I've been hitting the town since I’ve sworn off the dating sites for now. All the available men out on the weekends seem to fall into two age categories. Under 30, never been married and over 50, divorced with grown children. Neither of these are really my type. I’ve never been attracted to boyish gangly good looks. Being a cougar makes me feel creepy, wrinkled, and old. It’s just not my thing. I like to be with someone a little past their prime so I can be the hot one in the relationship. I’m trying to feel better about myself not worse. The other over 50 group is not really my scene either because they are a little too past their prime and I can’t relate with the college kids and bitter ex-wife war stories, it’s a little much. But what these two demographics do have in common is they are only interested in sex (which I don’t totally have an issue with) and they are totally uninterested in dating a woman with a toddler. I get it but I wish every time I mentioned I had a three year old it wasn’t as if a bomb just went off in the restaurant bar. These men actually turn white and back away at the mere mention of a toddler. The irony of the situation is that the most joyful, wonderful thing in my life is the one thing that has become taboo to mention in flirtatious banter. I actually got heckled at Nobu last week by a group of men when I was leaving for the night with another single mom friend. They yelled out, “Bye Moms” at us across the whole patio In an instant I was transformed from the vision I had of myself that night as a sexy chick in leather pants and stilettos to an overweight lady in mom jeans with unbrushed hair, and spit up on my shirt. Being a mom is a label I wear more proudly than any designer brand but it doesn’t seem to be the best thing when trying to get laid that’s for sure.

The following week I met a with a guy closer to the 50 range but he had never been married which is a whole other kind of animal. We text and flirted and everything was moving along nicely until he friended me on Facebook. One look at me trick or treating with my son on Halloween and I never heard from him again. So what’s a single mom to do I guess my only option would be a man in my same age bracket who has young children as well. Unfortunately, most of them are at home on Friday night…with their wives. I guess I’ll just have to wait it out for the divorces to start happening and then those men will come back on the market. Patience is a virtue.

Some of Jen’s Past Work
The Fairy Tale Falls Apart
I have to start off by saying, I can’t believe I am back in the dating game. If you think dating is brutal, try doing it with a toddler. It was hard enough to find someone to marry me the first go around.

I guess I have to explain how I got in this predicament in the first place.

I was working in the entertainment business as a stylist and dating tons of exciting men. I guess some would call them bad boys, but I thought they were quite good. Unfortunately, those kind do not like to settle down and as I rounded the corner on thirty, my clock was ticking at warp speed. So, I married the first vanilla-flavored schmuck I could get my hands on. I played everything by the rules for the first time in my life. I thought with my head, not my heart. I went with the safe choice, not the blood-boiling, panty ripping, two timing, stay up late laughing, thrill rides I was used to.

Everyone praised me for growing up. Other women wanted my advice. It seemed I had played my cards right into the hand every girl dreams about.

The Sext Best Thing
Sexting has been getting a really bad rap lately due to the infamous iCloud leak and I’m pretty bummed out about it. Sexting is the single mom’s best friend. After a long day of toddlerdom, it’s pretty hard to get it together to actually go out on a date, let alone, sift through all the losers on Tinder to find someone to actually sleep with. Friday and Saturday night TV is the worst and I’m usually looking for some kind of adult high by the time the weekend arrives. Most weekends I don’t have the energy for a night out and let’s face it by the time the uber and the babysitter are paid, the emotional, financial , and physical cost of the evening is just too high. It might be worth it for a party at Jimmy Kimmel’s house or backstage passes to the new hot band I probably haven't even heard of, but, I can assure you the only V.I.P. lists that I make it on to these days is for 4 year old birthday parties at Giggles and Hugs.
